About Training
Heavy Combination Truck License Training
A Heavy Combination (HC) is a primary mover attached to a single semi-trailer with a GVM greater than 9 tons. You can apply for a heavy combination licence after 24 months of holding a medium rigid (MR) or heavy rigid (HR) licence. This licence permits you to drive any articulated truck with three or more axles. For example, a prime mover with a single semi-trailer, or a heavy rigid vehicle carrying a single trailer weighing more than 9 tons.
Holding a Heavy Combination (HC) licence is an excellent method to expand your work prospects, particularly in the transportation business. This training may be right for you if you want to operate containers, tippers, or tankers with only one trailer. This training makes it possible to gather fuel and deliver groceries to stores.
Types Of HC Licenses
- There are three types of HC licences you can apply for based on the training you undergo:
- Automatic: This enables you to drive automatic HC exclusively.
- Synchromesh: This enables you to drive automobiles equipped with synchromesh or automatic gearboxes (single clutch).
- Road Ranger: This lets you drive any type of HC vehicle (double clutch).

Course Requirements To Apply For HC Training
To be eligible to test, students must first meet some specific requirements. If the conditions are not met, trainees will be unable to take the on-road test and will have to continue training throughout the course. If students schedule further training and/or testing, they will incur additional charges.
- The students must:
- hold a current driver's licence.
- hold an Australian MR or HR driver's license for at least 12 months, produce secondary proof of identity, and have studied the Truck and Bus Handbook.
Students who wish to obtain this licence in a non-synchromesh vehicle must have substantial manual driving experience.
