HR-A Licence
Automatic Gearbox Training
- 4 Hours Training
- 1 Hour Assessment / PDA
Roadmaster Truck Driving School offers HR Synchromesh licence training in Perth for eligible drivers who want to learn heavy rigid truck driving with a manual synchromesh gearbox. A synchromesh transmission helps match gear speeds during a change, but safe truck driving still requires correct clutch use, gear selection, braking, observation and control of the vehicle's size and weight.
This HR manual truck training can suit learners comparing automatic, synchromesh and non-synchromesh pathways for transport, delivery, civil, construction or other heavy vehicle work. Lessons can cover pre-start checks, moving off, smooth gear changes, downshifting, hill starts, turning space, mirror use and practical assessment preparation. Before booking HR synchromesh truck training, confirm that you meet the Western Australian Heavy Rigid licence requirements. Transport WA states that HR applicants must be at least 19, must no longer be provisional, and must have held:
You also need to complete the relevant identity, eyesight, heavy vehicle theory and application requirements before the Practical Driving Assessment. Check the latest rules and fees with Transport WA before booking your training.
Have the required non-provisional C, LR or MR licence history and bring your current driver licence to your training appointment.
Synchromesh training requires coordinated clutch, gear and brake control. Your instructor can help identify the skills you need to practise before assessment.
Complete the WA heavy vehicle theory test and commercial vehicle eyesight check before sitting the practical assessment.
Ask about the available HR synchromesh vehicle, transmission type, lesson format and assessment vehicle requirements before booking.
Synchromesh lessons focus on safe, controlled operation of a manual heavy rigid truck. Depending on your experience and the training vehicle, practical instruction may include:
The purpose of training is to build consistent, safe driving habits rather than to memorise a test route. Training does not guarantee a pass; your result depends on your preparation and safe driving performance on the day. For course availability and vehicle details, contact Roadmaster.
The transmission used for your heavy vehicle Practical Driving Assessment affects the restriction recorded on your licence. Transport WA states that if you pass the PDA in a vehicle with a synchromesh transmission, your licence will be restricted to vehicles fitted with an automatic or synchromesh gearbox.
This means an HR synchromesh assessment does not provide the same transmission access as an assessment in a manual non-synchromesh vehicle. If your future work requires non-synchromesh manual driving, compare this course with HR Road Ranger training. If you prefer not to drive a manual truck, consider HR automatic training instead.
The assessment vehicle must meet the applicable WA vehicle standard. For current booking, vehicle and assessment information, read the official HR Practical Driving Assessment guidance.
First, choose the right gearbox for your training and career goals.
